Start with the parish plan

Ask the parish catechetical team about the preparation schedule, required meetings and how First Reconciliation fits into the process. Let them know about learning, communication or accessibility needs so you can plan together.

Keep the dates in one place and ask whom to contact when questions arise. Local programs differ; advice from friends at another parish may not match the arrangements for your child.

Make room for questions

After a preparation session, ask what your child remembers and what they found puzzling. Listen before offering an explanation. If you are unsure how to answer a question about the Eucharist, write it down and ask the catechist.

Avoid treating preparation as a performance. Children may need to revisit ideas several times. Use the materials your parish provides so the language at home supports what they are learning.

Practice the ordinary parts of going to Mass

Plan a little extra time to arrive and settle. Help your child find the readings or responses in a worship aid. Afterward, talk about one thing you noticed together.

Ask the parish to explain the practical details of receiving Communion and let your child ask questions in advance. Keep any practice calm and connected to reverence, rather than making the child worry about a public mistake.

Keep the celebration in perspective

Choose clothing, photographs and a family gathering that suit your circumstances. Avoid letting expense or comparison overshadow the sacrament.

After the celebration, continue the habits that supported preparation: going to Mass, praying together and asking questions. Keep a favorite prayer or memory in the family journal as a reminder of the day.

Ask your child one open question about preparation, and bring any unanswered questions to the catechist.
