A godparent helps the baptized person grow in Christian life. This is an ongoing responsibility in the Church, rather than simply an honorary role at the ceremony.

Choose someone able to accompany your child through prayer, example and a lasting relationship. The Church has eligibility requirements, and the parish will explain how these apply and what documentation it needs. Confirm eligibility before making a promise or printing invitations.
A practical beginning
Ask a potential godparent how they could stay involved: remembering the baptism anniversary, praying regularly or sharing an age-appropriate saint story. A nearby person is helpful, but a thoughtful long-distance relationship can also be meaningful.
