Catholics entrust the dead to God’s mercy and pray for their purification. The Church teaches that those who die in God’s friendship may still need purification before the fullness of heavenly joy.

Prayer for the dead expresses hope and love. It does not claim that we know a particular person’s final condition. Families may request a Mass intention, pray together or perform an act of charity in remembrance.
A practical beginning
Name your loved one in a simple prayer and ask your parish about a Mass intention. You may also keep a remembrance page with a favorite story. Love, grief and Christian hope can remain present together.
