In the sacrament of Reconciliation, Christ works through the ministry entrusted to his Church. A priest serves God’s forgiveness and reconciles the penitent with God and the Church; he is not its independent source.
A little more context
Confession includes honest acknowledgment of sins, sorrow, a purpose of amendment, absolution and the assigned penance. The priest is bound by the sacramental seal to keep the confession secret. It is a personal encounter with mercy, not a public performance.
A practical beginning
Find a scheduled confession time or request an appointment. If you are nervous, say that plainly at the beginning. You can ask the priest to guide you through the order of the sacrament.
